[bksvol-discuss] Additional Changes In Last Release

John forgot to mention a few of the changes made in the last release.

Step 2 now displays the expiration date for books out for validation, and an
e-mail is being sent out 2 days prior to a book's expiration date reminding
the volunteer to renew the book. The validation period has also been
modified slightly to give volunteers a full 7 days for validation. In the
past, if a book was downloaded on a Friday, it would expire just after
midnight the following Friday, forcing a volunteer to renew it by Thursday.
Now, if a book is downloaded on Friday the 31st, a volunteer can renew it on
Friday the 7th. If not renewed , then the book will expire just after
midnight on Saturday the 8th. It comes out to actually being between 7 and
8 days to work on the book, depending on the time of day the book was
downloaded. In the above example, the reminder will be sent out just after
midnight on Thursday the 6th, 48 hours before the book will expire. Based
on what I saw, the renew link is appearing on Step 2 on the 4th day, which
would be just after midnight on Tuesday the 4th in the above example.

I see Jake has informed everyone of the other item John forgot: the new list
of the top recent downloads.

Also, the Volunteer Manual should b ready very soon. It would have been
released last week if it hadn't been for my cutting my left ring finger,
which has prevented me from typing with it for the last few weeks. I messed
it up pretty bad and had to have 12 stitches in it. I'm starting to get a
bit of use out of it now, and I plan to help Jake get the finishing touches
done to the manual in the next few days.

Since someone's bound to ask, I caught my finger on a nail or sharp piece of
wood coming down out of the attic. I slipped coming down and needed both
hands to steady myself to keep from falling, and I reached up and grabbed
the wrong spot with my left hand. It kept me from falling badly, but I
still fell off the ladder and cut my finger wide open when my grip slipped.
Luckily I wasn't very high on the ladder when it happened. Reaching out
with my left hand though allowed me to steady myself just enough so that I
cleared the ladder and landed on my feet. I was told by more than one
person at the ER that I was lucky that I couldn't see the damage. They
could see the tendon. Got the stitches out a week and a half ago and the
bandage off last Friday. I start physical therapy on it tomorrow.

That's the reason why I haven't been helping Jake answer questions lately.

Gerald

Subject: [bookshare-discuss] An Update From Bookshare

Hello All,

The Bookshare team has been busy again, and we have made some updates to the
site which we hope you will like:
Here is a summery of the things that have been done:

Submission and validation credits now carry over from year to year. This
means that when a subscription is renewed using credits, additional credits
above the renewal price remain in your account.

The number of books which a validator can have out for validation at one
time is now limited to a maximum of 5. We hope this change will allow more
people to validate, and allow books to be processed more quickly.

We had some reports of problems with simple search, these should be fixed.

Also, there were some authors who couldn't be found using the search
functions. We believe that these have been corrected, but if you find any
which are broken, please let us know.

For some books, the synopsis fields had spaces removed, these have been
corrected.

We are very close to posting our volunteer manual. I am sure that all of
you will find valuable information in it. We will send a message out to the
lists when it is available.

There have been many other internal changes and fixes, which make Bookshare
faster and more efficient for our system administrators.
