[bksvol-discuss] Re: Accuracy of books being scanned list - question for all volunteers scanning

Thank you, Judy. A month or so ago I tried to get volunteers to double check the list, but was unsuccessful. I'm glad you were able to get this done. It certainly helps a lot. A simple way to notify Cindy that a book has reached a certain stage of the process, either ready to proof, or accepted in the collection, would be to simply forward the notice that bookshare sends.

Cindy, I think the names of who is scanning each book are actually very important. I didn't realize it until I started helping remove the duplicates from this list. smile.

The major reason why I want to know who said they are going to scan a book is this: if a volunteer quits, we won't ever know that the books that they said they were going to scan are no longer going to get scanned. Also, people change their mind or just don't remember that they said they were going to scan something, and don't let Cindy know. Also, there have been software glitches that I'm pretty sure scrambled information, so that for example a title supposedly being scanned by one person is really getting scanned by another

I'm thinking here about both perspectives that have been posted today on the books being scanned lists, that on the one hand, it has some errors that are fixable or on the other hand that it has some serious problems that might mean it is more work to correct it than it is to start over.

I really believe that the only way to know how accurate or inaccurate the books being scanned list is currently is to ask the volunteers who scan to look at this list to see if they think the information regarding titles they intend to scan is accurate as of now. Based on that, we'll know better if there are just a few things to get fixed or if it would be as much work to fix the errors they're reporting as it is to maybe build something new, or start over (as horrendous as that may be!). smile.

So, scanners, have any of you other than the one's who have posted corrections looked at the list? If not, would you please? Is it accurate regarding what you're scanning or intending to scan? If not, what's wrong (for example, you decided not to scan the book, you never intended to scan a book and have no idea why you're listed as scanning it, you already scanned the book, etc.)? If the information pertaining to you and the titles you intend to scan is accurate, could you post that too? That way we'll know both the good and the bad! smile.

In my opinion it's easier to fix a few errors than to start a whole new list. (And it's not just I who have been working to get it in order, but also Judy and Elizabeth). Also in my opinion, the names of who's doing the scanning isn't really important. I only included them so that if someone wanted to proof a particular book he/she could contact the scanner and ask him/her to put a hold on it. But that can be done by posting on the volunteer list, too.

I made some mistakes in the beginning when people sent me a slew of books they were scanning. I just copied and pasted without looking to see if the titles were duplicated and some people posted on the list and I took the names from the From space on the list. I'll look more carefully and if I can't figure out from whom he message is I'll ask on the list. smile

    Hi Melissa,

I found a similar problem with a book that I'm supposed to be
scanning that is first, two titles linked together, one of which I know
    nothing about.

I would like to respectfully submit that perhaps the being scanned list needs to be abandoned as it is, and begun again from scratch. And
perhaps, rather than each of us telling every book that we intend to
    scan
ever, that we state each month, only those books that we know we can
    get to
    that month.

It just seems so much simpler, and cleaner, and so much, much less
work. Also, there are books on that list being scanned by folks
    whom I've
never seen on this list, and that have been on the list for years,
    since the
    list was started.

I really think it would be easier to begin the list from scratch. I hate to abandon a project with so much work put into it, but somehow the
list seems to have gotten terribly terribly corrupted.

Please, Cindy, don't think I'm passing judgment on your work. I'm
    not. I'm
starting to suspect that you have been a victim of some evil computer gremlins. Files trashed by forces incomprehensible to nongeeks like me.

I also have down that Shannon is scanning the following book.

I don't know anything about this book, either:
Oakdale Confidential, Anonymous is being scanned by Jamie
