I have three recognition engines available to me and I did try the other
two on the book I am currently scanning. One of them introduced a lot of
scanning errors and the other one seemed to make the line break problem worse
with a lot of those j's and i's at the end of lines. That second thing happens
often anyway, but I can usually correct it by just rescanning the page on
which it occurs. With the other recognition engine, though, no matter how many
times I rescanned it happened every time. I am inclined to just keep on
doing what I am doing and asking the proofreader to remove the line breaks by
mentioning it in the comments section. Remember that I do not have Word and
so I cannot remove them myself in the way it has been suggested. I would have
to go through the entire book line by line and remove them manually, that
is, unless someone knows a quick and easy way to do it in Wordpad or Open
Book. It has also occured to me that if every book I scan is going to be
bounced back then I might just give up scanning and go back to just
proofreading.
Also, I did not know I had this problem until my scans started to be
returned to the check out list for more editing. I have a number of scans that
are
now in the collection. That makes me wonder if it was not happening before
and just started at some point or if Carrie had not noticed it before.

Roger, I don't know what else you can do besides trying a different OCR
recognition engine; that might help. I also make sure that recognize columts is
checked.

I have Openbook 7.2, and sometimes books scan without any problem and
sometimes line breaks occur when they should not.

I have simply adopted the technique of converting the file to .rtf and
using the technique that Mayrie has suggested to remove incorrect paragraph
markings.

In my settings there is a check box labeled "keep exact view." It is
unchecked. There is nothing there about text view.

Yes, Mayrie, you're correct. I use OpenBook 8 and have my view set to text
view.

Roger, changing your view to text view should correct the problem.

Hi Roger,

I thought Lori said to turn off "exact view" to get rid of the paragraph
symbols after each line.  As for end of line hyphens, I don't know.  I'm not
an
openbook user, but I thought I remembered Lori saying to turn off "exact
view" to get rid of extra paragraph marks.

I am getting the feeling that my Open Book 6.0 is really inferior. There is
no setting to get rid of end of line hyphens that I know of. Also, in the
comments
section for some books I scanned that were bounced back to step one, Carrie
has told me to change my OCR settings so that it will not insert a line
break
after every line, but I can find no setting that even mentions such a
thing.

Hi,

When people scan, they're supposed to set their OCR to get rid of
end of line hyphens.  There is generally a setting to get rid of those.

I wouldn't expect either of back seat or good looking to be hyphenated at
all.  Also, what is supposed to be done with line ending hyphens, since the
bookshare tools deal in paragraphs, not lines?
