This sounds like a winner!! I have been trying to convince my husband that
I should replace my old cassette recorder with one of these. After all,
cassettes won't be around forever. I already have a Nokia cell phone with
Talks software and a 1Gb Iriver MP3 player, both of which have voice
recorders, but I'm concerned about how much recording capacity I would have
with the cell phone and the recorder on the Iriver isn't real accessible.

The following Olympus digital Voice recorders are now in our store and ready
to ship! These Olympus DS-30, DS-40, and DS-50 have autible menus and were
designed with the Visually impaired in mind. These are great for putting
your books that you have downloaded from BookShare into MP3 format and
listening to them on the Olympus DS-50 Digital Voice recorder.
The buttons are very easy to feel, and the recorder is very accessible. The
software talks during the installation, and it is very accessible with any
screen reader. I installed it with Window-Eyes. You do not have to install
the software if you don't want to.
This Olympus DS-50 digital Voice recorder comes with the following: 1 gig of
storage on the Olympus unit in a non-removable media. A USB cable, Software,
A case, and Remote control for the external stereo microphone. It also comes
with a set of stereo ear buds. The unit is very tactile and looks wonderful.
It has an on/off switch that can not accidently be turned on. You can
control it with the stereo microphone when attached to the remote control.
When you press the folder button located just below the LCD display on the
left, The sweet little english female voice tells you what folder you are
in.
When you press the little round button in the center of the pie shaped
circle, and hold it down, you are then in the main menu. These
4 pie shaped buttons in the center of the unit which are separated, with a
tiny space between each button shaped like a little dial, are the up and
down arrows, and the left and right arrows. The okay button is located in
the center of the round dial. You can navigate through the talking menu's
with these buttons very easily. When you press the folder button on the row
of buttons above the dial, you know what folder you are in. You can play
your files by arrowing down the files in the folder, and pressing the okay
button in the center. If you hit the left arrow, it will take you out of the
folder you are in. Then you may arrow down through the folders. You have
folders A., B., C., D., E., Music., Audible. The Audible folder is for
Audible books downloaded from Audible.com. The Music folder has a Podcast
folder in it. The sweet little English lady reads all the menu's and these
folders to you. These are very accessible. Down just below the dial on the
left hand corner of the dial is another button.
This is the delete button. Up above the dial are 3 buttons. One is a folder
button, and I have not explorered the other 2 buttons yet. As soon as I do,
this document will be revised. This is the ideal recorder for everyone.
On the left hand side of the recorder there is a slidable switch with
3 positions. The unit has three modes, Conference mode, lecture mode, and
Dictation mode. These modes are selected by a button on the left hand side
of the unitwith a position for each mode. At the top of the recorder on the
left hand side is the ear bud connector. Down below the selectable switch
for the modes is the little cover that covers the USB connector. You just
remove this connector, only on 3 sides, and it hangs there by one corder, so
you can't take it off and loose it. and plug in the Mini connector of the
USB cable, and then plug it into your computer. More on this later. Down
below the USB connector is another button to select the modes which determin
the quality of the recordings. These modes are dictation, lecture, and
Conference modes. The buttons on the right hand side of the recorder are
going from the top to the bottom. The top button is the record button, down
from that, is the pause button, and down from that, is the play button.
Below the play button is the on/off switch which in the up position is the
hold position, and you put it in the lower position for the on/off, then
pulling it towards you to the bottom of the unit you will hear a different
sound for on and off.
When you are ready to install the software, do not plug in the USB cable to
the Olympus recorder to do this. When installing the software, you place
the CD-rom in the appropriate drive, and you arrow up and hit enter on the
word Setup. Then a box comes up and you select the language you want to
install. You would select English, and press enter. Just follow the prompts
as the installation is very speech friendly. You just press enter on the
default prompts, and then on the finish button. The software does not make a
shortcut on the desktop, as it comes up automatically when you attach the
USB cable to the recorder, and then to the computer.
When you are ready to set the date and time, you may do this from your
computer, by plugging in the USB cable to the recorder, and turning it on,
and then plug in the larger end to the computer. If you are running XP
Windows will automatically see it, and it will load the software. You then
go into the Tools and Options menu and tab to "date and time." It will get
the date and time from your computer. This software is extremely speech
friendly and is really very easy to use. The layout of the folders is like
Windows Explorer.
You can do so much with this software.
Just purchase one from Ferguson Enterprises, and you will be very happy you
did so! The quality of the speech is better than the WS series. Your files
are saved in .wma format which can be played with either Windows Media
player or WinAmp. These files may be converted to MP3 files if you want. The
recorder will play mp3 files.
