You're right, David. I can only speak for myself, but
I admit that I am overly sensitive. I was thinking,
childishly, or "picking up my marbles and going
home." But I agree with Sue and Kaitlin. This has been
a friendly, as well as a helpful list, and lots of
people, in addition to Guido and Pratik, whose wild
humor I will really miss if they stop posting here,
have wonderful senses of humor.

By posting items occasionally off-topic, or making
off-topic comments to on-topic posts, people's
personalities seem to come across, as they do with the
tenor of the on-topic posts. They become individuals
and friends. We, at least I, become interested in
their lives -- graduate school, jobs, entering college
as freshmen, weddings, children -- that's why some
people feel they can express their sorrows at certain
events in their lives, as well as their happinesses,
and we can console as well as share their joys.

I don't initiate off-topic discussions, but I do
respond to posts with them when I feel like it. I'm
going to do the same as Sue -- continue to be myself.
I will try to remember to use OT, which, though
sometimes I forget, I usually remember to do and to
change the subject line. If, as I think Kellie or Jana
said, we all do that, the person who doesn't like to
read OT subjects can delete without reading the post.

I might suggest, too, that people who don't like this
list subscribe to the bookshare-discuss list instead.
I'm on both. Although that, as I understand, was
intended for book discussions than for volunteer
problem discussions, it seems to be the latter as well
as this one -- and I don't think I've seen any, or
certainly not many, OT posts there -- only requests
for help.
