The following are birding highlights from August 21 and 22. Thirteen species of shorebirds including family groups of Black-necked Stilts on the Mississippi River in Carlisle and Fulton Counties, and at Lake 9. Other shorebirds observed included Ruddy Turnstone, Sanderling, Stilt Sandpiper, Western Sandpiper, and many gorgeous juvenile Semipalmated and Least Sandpipers, as well as other expected common species. Two groups of over 200 American White Pelicans each in Carlisle and Fulton Counties. Approximately 700 Egrets and Herons at Lake 9 in Fulton County with probably 500 Great Egrets and 150 Snowy. A marked increase in Ring-billed Gulls has occurred in the past week with many at Kentucky, Barkley, and Smithland dams. A juvenile Herring Gull was present below Smithland dam on the 22nd, as were two Common Terns. Least, Caspian, and Black Terns were present in good numbers at most stops with 130 Caspians on a bar at Kuttawa on Lake Barkley. Mississippi Kites could be found almost anywhere along the Mississippi River while scanning the horizon. Dave __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
