Barbara and I were recently given the privilege of a visit to the wintering Whooping Cranes at Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge near Crystal River, Florida. We have been looking forward to this trip since last year when Sara Zimorski, tracking and winter management team co-leader and International Crane Foundation aviculturalist, first made the offer. Arriving at the boat dock we joined Sara and Eva Szyszkoski, ICF Tracking Field Manager, for the 8 minute air boat ride to the site. It was then a short walk to a small 2 story hide, where the pen is easily observed. Barb and I remained in the hide as Sara and Eva donned costumes and then attended to the 10 whopping crane chicks. I have put together a short photo essay that I hope you will enjoy.
