With the new month I thought I would visit the new Big Rivers Wildlife Management Area and State Forest: http://fw.ky.gov/kfwis/arcims/wma.asp?strId=9203 The old railroad trail is a really nice walk. Since it was once a railroad to carry coal to the Ohio River, it is nice and level cutting through the hilly terrain. Forested and with small open areas of corn and by the Ohio a field of beans. Not great weather for birding: overcast and breezy. But I didn't get hot! No mosquitos or biting flies. And I got home with only 5 ticks. Highlights: Kentucky Warblers singing. all the turkey hens and broods 1 skunk Deer: 2 bucks, 1 doe with fawn nursing, 2 more doe Big Rivers WMA & State Forest, Union, US-KY Jun 1, 2012 6:30 AM - 12:00 PM Protocol: Traveling 6.0 mile(s) Comments: Walked the old RR trail from its head to the old concrete river terminal on Ohio and back: about 6 miles total. 33 species (+1 other taxa) Wood Duck 1 Wild Turkey 17 8 Hens and 9 poults Great Blue Heron (Blue form) 2 at the Ohio River Mourning Dove 1 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 5 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1 Belted Kingfisher 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker X Downy Woodpecker 1 Pileated Woodpecker 6 Eastern Wood-Pewee X Acadian Flycatcher X Empidonax sp.
