This is the Kentucky Bird Line, sponsored by the Kentucky Ornithological
Society. This update is current as of December 16, 2002 at 9:00 PM EST.
The highlights of this update are the continued presence of Rufous
Hummingbirds in the state and a summary of Christmas Bird Counts conducted
thus far.

The Danville Rufous Hummingbird continued to attend a feeder at the home of
Neil and Ginny Eklund as of December 9th, 2002. While there have been no
reports since that date, the bird had been regular in its visitations to
that point. The Bowling Green Rufous Hummingbird has not been observed
since November 30th and apparently has departed. However, an immature male
Rufous Hummingbird continues to be observed along South Park Road in
Jefferson County as of December 14th, 2002.

Several Christmas Bird Counts were held on December 14th and 15th in many
areas of the state. Selected highlights of those counts reporting results
follow:

· Warsaw:  a Surf Scoter, 17 Common Mergansers, and 3 species of gull;
· Wayne County: 70 species including a Snow Goose, 19 Sandhill Cranes, 3
American Pipits, 15 Chipping Sparrows, and 2 Vesper Sparrows;
· Lexington: 1 Common Goldeneye, 2 Pileated Woodpeckers, and 10 Hooded
Mergansers;
· Louisville:  89 species including 2 Mute Swans, 2 Peregrine Falcons, 15
Sandhill Cranes, 4 Brown Thrashers, 2 Lapland Longspurs, 1 Pine Siskin, and
2 Gray Catbirds; and
· Land Between the Lakes: 92 species including a Red-necked Grebe, 1 adult
Lesser Black-backed Gull, and 9 American White Pelicans.

On December 7th,Beckham Bird Club and the Kentucky Ornithological Society
sponsored a joint field trip to the Peabody Wildlife Management Area in Ohio
County. Highlights of this trip included 3 Rough-legged Hawks, 14
Short-eared Owls, 12 Wilson’s Snipe, a Ross’s Goose, and 9 species of
sparrow.

Other species of interest reported since the last update include an
Orange-crowned Warbler and a Merlin in Pulaski County and Sandhill Cranes in
Jefferson and Montgomery Counties.
