May 20, 2006: South Shore WMA Greenup County - Shorebirds were the primary focus of this East Ky Bird Club (EKBC) trip today, but some other interesting observations were made. A Rusty Blackbird was present at the wetlands. The bird was solitary and first appeared on the open mud flats of the smaller wetland. Later I approached within 20 yards when it was foraging in the shallow water of the larger wetland. A grasshopper sparrow was seen and heard singing near the parking area. One mallard brood was visible on the larger wetland as well as a wood duck brood. A female hooded merganser was present but no brood attended her. A willow flycatcher and tree swallows round out the more notable observations. Shorebirds included: Greater Yellowlegs (1) Lesser Yellowlegs (1) Solitary Sandpiper (2 to 4) Least Sandpiper (15) Semipalmated Plover (5) Killdeer (1) Scott Freidhof Morehead
