Purple martin nestlings on the ground right now are a result of the high
temperatures. Some types of housing heat up more than others. The wind
storm on Friday dislodged a nestling from one of my gourds too. In my
experience, adult martins do not feed nestlings on the ground. The best
course of action is to put the nestling back in a nest with similar-sized
young.

Subject: [birdky] Schochoh, Logan Co., weekend list

It?s been a while since I submitted a weekend list, and this one is pretty
typical for the end of June. The only things missing last weekend, that
have been present most recent weekends, are, Back Vulture, Red-tailed Hawk,
Baltimore Oriole and Redheaded Woodpecker.
Apparently, nesting is going fairly well here because we?re seeing lots of
juveniles of various species around the house. In the last few days, we?ve
seen Purple Martin and Cedar Waxwing babies on the ground, apparently
healthy but seeming too young to be out of their nests?I?m wondering if the
heat has anything to do with that? We still have Robins, Mockingbirds,
Red-winged Blackbirds, and Barn Swallows incubating (that I?m aware of) and
Chipping Sparrows, Mockingbirds, Tree Swallows and Cedar Waxwings feeding
fledglings around the house. I watched a juvenile male Baltimore Oriole
bathing in one of our birdbaths several weeks ago. BTW, baby Cedar Waxwings
top my list of cutest baby birds, with their stubby tails edged with bright
yellow!

One other noteworthy sighting was a ?flock? of Brown Thrashers, spotted this
morning at around 8:00 CDT along a cornfield lined road, about ½ mile south
of Schochoh. There were at least 12 of them and they seemed entirely out of
place there. Some were on the ground, some on the phone wires, some in the
corn?at least two were singing. I can say I?ve never seen a flock of
thrashers before!
