At 42 species, we're continuing our pattern of
highest-counts-ever-for-this-weekend-of-the-year (39 was highest for past
years). Some of this is due to our leaving a previously-mowed portion of
the property "naturalize", in recent years. We've also made other subtle
changes, like leaving the weedy stubble stand in the garden, over the
winter, instead of mowing it down and turning it under. It looks a mess,
but it tends to be where I see Savannah Sparrows and Bobwhites, this time of
year. Our bird highlights were, at least three, Pine Siskins in the birch
tree near the feeders yesterday, a flock of 20-30 Cedar Waxwings hanging
around and Harriers.Harriers were in view about any time I looked, both
days, mostly over the unharvested soybean field, south of the house. Myrtle
Warblers were here almost constantly too. We watched one bathe, in the bush
garden birdbath, while we ate lunch today.
