We counted 33 species, which is one more than last weekend, even though we
missed 5 this week, that we counted last week (Carolina Wren, Cooper's Hawk,
E. Collared Dove, GB Heron & Swamp Sparrow). The E. Bluebirds appear to be
staking out the boxes, the N. Mockingbirds are acting very territorial.not
just chasing each other, but anything with wings. There are dozens of
Robins here, some of which also appear to be staking their claims. This
list is fairly mundane except for the Hairy Woodpecker, which is uncommon
here in the open country. I spotted this bird in the Post Oak tree nearest
our feeders, where it was obviously disturbing one of our ever-present Downy
WP. The Hairy ignored the Downy, but at one point the agitated Downy was
within three or four feet; close enough that the relative size difference
was striking. The only other thing worth mentioning was a Kestrel briefly
harassing a Red-tailed Hawk, both showing nearly the same shade of copper on
their tails in today's bright sun (which we'd thought had disappeared
forever).
