We had a 40 specie weekend, which is a record for this time of year here.
We saw a single Palm Warbler and two Pine Siskins this morning and saw a
Hairy Woodpecker yesterday and again today (we've only recorded a Hairy
three other times in 8 years here). The Myrtles are still very plentiful,
and the Killdeers are gathering in the south wheat field.the way they did
two years ago, right before they all disappeared for three months.
Yesterday morning, I counted five sparrow species in the pond thicket, while
moving barely a foot. Perhaps the most satisfying moment was watching a
flock of 20-30 Cedar Waxwings that were busy eating Hawthorne berries from a
tree that we planted to try to compensate for the sterile "clean" farmed
land that surrounds us.
