Saturday, April 18 Rod Botkins, Ben and I birded several hours at Caperton. Rod gets thanks for our FOS prothonotary warbler when, despite recovering from bronchitis, he ran the length of Caperton in search of the two of us to let us know about the bird! Thanks Rod! The bird had flown from the island in the pond and landed above him. While following its song into the area to the east of the pond a blue-winged warbler bee-buzzed close-by overhead providing us with some great looks. Several hermit thrushes and thrashers also made an appearance. Raptors of interest were fly- overs of an osprey and, at the entrance of Caperton, three broad- wings in a tiny kettle headed northeast.

Sunday, April 19 Ben and I were in Lexington and decided to check on the whether the Woodbine Drive yellow-crowned night herons were back. We spotted four nests that survived the ice storm – one of them busily being added to by a beautiful pair of YCNHs. The nest-in- progress is the lowest one directly over the road. (YIKES!) Before heading back to Louisville we looped through the Lexington cemetery hoping the rainy weather had caused a fallout of warblers. No luck on the warblers, but there were at least 8 hermit thrushes in small area sitting up on the stones in the rain.

This evening I stopped by Draut Park after work and did a quick walk- through just to see what might be there.
Highlights included:
solitary sandpiper
indigo bunting (male in non-breeding plumage)
blue-gray gnatcatchers galore
heard a "chink" that sounded like a rose-breasted grosbeak but never saw it for confirmation ruby-crowned kinglet singing quietly to itself as it hunted for insects right over my head
chipping, song, field and white-throated sparrows
a pair of chimney swifts
female mallard with nine fluff balls in tow
