McElroy Lake began to form on February 14 with birds
first present in significant numbers on the 17th.
Although it isn't very extensive at this time, there
probably is enough water for the lake to last a week
or longer without significant additional rainfall.

For those interested in birding the area, there are
two good places to park. One is a lane along hwy 884
which turns left just south of the culvert as you
approach a row of houses. This is at the southern end
of the field which holds the lake, and in a very
dangerous curve so please be careful here. It is OK
to park in the lane down to the area of the walnut
trees, but please don't follow it out into the field
in your vehicle.

The second is a grassy area along Meng Rd. on the
eastern side of the lake. There is a utility pole
here and enough room to pull of the road.

There is also a grassy area along Hwy 884 just north
of the culvert which is OK if not too wet.

Wherever one parks, it will require some walking in
the mud to see the birds well even with a scope.
Parking along Meng Rd in the morning would provide
better lighting as would afternoons at the lane along
884.

Please do not drive or park around the owner's house
or buildings along 884 near the center of the lake.
He has been very gracious through the years in
allowing birders access to the area.
