Matt Stickel, Mary Walter, Ben Yandell and myself birded west KY yesterday, May 1, going from Sinclair WMA, Muhlenberg County west to western Fulton County. We tallied 163 species for the day for the group; I think all but 5 or 6 were seen or heard by us all. Highlights were as follows: Rockport-Paradise Road, Muhl Co -- calling Virginia Rails and Sora. Sinclair WMA -- at least 10 American Woodcocks peenting and performing (the cool morning must have had them thinking it was a warm February morning!); probably at least a couple of dozen Henslow's Sparrows; 3 Northern Harriers. Lake Barkley in vicinity of Kuttawa -- 3 Am White Pelicans; Lake Barkley above the dam -- the Western Grebe provided some distant, but nice looks (afternoon light combined with low level of heat waves allowed good study). The bird dove a lot, but also rested; seemed to keep to the northeastern quadrant of the above-dam lake; good morning views might be obtained from the campground (Eureka?? -- can't recall the name for sure) that is accessible off the road to Boyd's Landing south from Suwanee; but afternoon light on a sunny day would make distant views from Green Turtle Bay marina the most desirable. Also present here were some Lesser Scaup, 2 female Red-br Mergs, and a male Common Goldeneye. Land Between the Lakes and Grand Rivers environs -- we saw the pair of S-t Flycats; the tower on which they are nest building is the LARGE, lattice-type tower north of the entrance to the quarry (same side of the road as previous years' nests); 26 spp of warblers including Cape May, Bay-breasted, and Blackpoll plus all the regular LBL nesters including Cerulean and Hooded; 2 Gray-cheeked Thrushes. Kentucky Lake above the dam -- not much action in the larid line ... 2 Common Loons; 5 Surf Scoters in the company of a small flock of Lesser Scaup. Ky Dam Village St Pk beach -- 8 Western Willets. Obion WMA, Fulton Co. -- loads of yellowlegs, but little else; 5 dowitchers were too distant to determine species ID for certain. KY 94 at Mud Creek, Fulton Co. -- a few shorebirds including 2 White-rumpeds. Western Fulton Co. in and around Long Point Unit -- most of the same shorebird mix ... lots of 'legs plus Pects and another flock of 20-25 unconfirmed dowitchers in a distant pond; Common Moorhen; some lingering dabblers including Gadwall and Am Wigeon. The day was beautiful despite the cool pre-dawn temps and some breezy conditions in the evening hours. bpb, Louisville ================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBERS============== The BIRDKY Mailing List requires you to sign your messages with first & last name, city, & state abbreviation. -------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, send e-mail to: birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx -------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send e-mail to: birdky-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject line. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the Kentucky Ornithological Society web site at http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos.htm * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BIRDKY List Manager: Gary Ritchison, Richmond, KY E-mail: gary.ritchison@xxxxxxx
