[birdky] RPT: Lake Pewee and Other Hopkins Co. birds

19 February 2005:
This morning, I was able to spend about and 1 hour and 45 minutes
birding around and exploring/birding the Madisonville, Hopkins County
area while waiting on my daughter to participate in an academic
competition at Madisonville-North Hopkins HS.
At Lake Pewee, the following were observed:
3 Northern Shovelers
3 Redheads
10 Canvasbacks
2 Lesser Scaup
app 20 Buffleheads
1 Red-breasted Merganser
app 20 Ruddy Ducks
30+ Pied Billed Grebes
1 Great Blue Heron
70 + American Coots, &
2 Ring-billed Gulls
At a pond off the west side of Pennyrile Parkway between exits 42 and 44
the follow were observed:
36 Gadwall
6 Mallards
10 Redheads
1 Canvasback
4 Ring Necked Ducks
1 Lesser Scaup, &
2 Pied-billed Grebes
At White City WMA (exploring quickly) the following were observed:
1 Wood Duck (female heard ascending into flight)
2 Buffleheads
2 Hooded Mergansers
2 Pied-billed Grebes, &
1 Belted Kingfisher
Other birds of possible interest included numerous Red-tailed Hawks (all
eastern), several American Kestrels, a single Northern Harrier, & Canada
Geese in various locations. Common passerines and similar added to my
mini-list rounded out 44 species for the brief birding period.
Also, about 30 Wild Turkeys were recorded in western Christian County
just north of US 68 just after dawn this AM.
That concludes this report.
