Yesterday afternoon we got a good look at a male Northern Oriole, first in a post oak, then in a cherry tree. I hear them almost every day this time of year, but seldom see one. Once again, a Killdeer is nesting in my tobacco patch. It held its ground while I was cultivating and made me stop the tractor. I got off and put a red rag one plant away from its nest, then raised the front cultivator up a little as I passed over it so I wouldn't throw dirt over the eggs. We had our first blackberry pie Saturday. In our heavily cultivated county, one could drive up and down side roads all day and never encounter wild blackberries along the road side, other than on my place.
