Poor Brainy. Us prickly types don’t always come off well in e-mails. Just
think, if a person from up east (Boston to Maine) said free beer, it would
likely come out free bee-ah :o)

The only one who should be apologizing today is me. I should have just let
things be. I thought my email about the Alder Flycat would be funny to some
without thinking that it would be taken incorrectly by others. I rode herd
over KY bird record-keeping for more than 20 years and a lot of folks are
used to me being serious about bird stuff like that, so I'm sorry it came
across wrong to some or many. In fact these days I am birding with fewer and
fewer people it seems; costs of getting out and the pandemic in part. So part
of it may be there are fewer folks who are familiar with me and joking around
. . . I just realized a couple of days ago when someone mentioned that the
Beckham Bird Club changed where it meets that I hadn't been to a meeting in
2-3 years.
We lose way too many of our active, sharing birders to other places through
the years, I know Jane and Pat Bell (who have been birding as long as me here
locally) also recognize how many of our birding friends have come and gone,
but one of the real joys is all the new people who do turn up. Somehow I
never get tired of sharing things like the Alder Flycatcher and Connecticut
Warbler on my family's farm last week with birding friends. Seems like there
is always someone new wanting to tick that bird they've never seen before (or
those who can never get enough warblers).
I had a very pleasant day birding in Henderson County yesterday. Part of my
intent was to spend some time with one of the nicest and most enthusiastic
new members or our community, David Stone. I know one of the topics of our
conversations was how differently he already feels (in a positive way) about
interacting with everyone. Look out James Wheat and Jeremy Teague . . . I
have a feeling we have a future KOS president on our hands!
And one more thing . . . the bit about "if I was an eBird reviewer" wasn't a
knock of some sort on our state's eBird team. We are blessed with as good a
core group as any state from what I can tell. This started with the filters
that Roseanna set up which are *very* involved and take a lot of work to do
well, as well as the team of county reviewers she has chosen to assist.
