Two miles north of Dot in Logan County - I don’t see much waterfowl any more,
so seeing something as commonplace as a Coot led me to file a report. Also got
a better excuse to show my slotted entry, because a Song Sparrow was using one
of the nest boxes as a perch. Took along a tape measure this morning and
determined that the slot size that is barring House Sparrows is 3/4 inch by 2.5
inches. Tree Swallows were by a couple of these boxes but I’ve yet to see one
enter. A House Sparrow had built a nest in one box that had a 7/8 inch x 2.5
inch slot. Three Kestrels were perched on the walnut snag as we approached, so
at least one little guy is hanging out in the area. A Barn Swallow was
incubating eggs in the stable and I’m now seeing 7 Purple Martins around the
gourds. Not sure why the number keeps increasing. Might they be recruiting new
house mates?
