JLH: Et al: But apparently if I get a permit, and get no birds, no new permits
are issued; ie 400 permits to get  400 birds asap, weather each hunter gets one
or two, season ends early when 400 birds are reported "harvested " =/g / gerald

ps: happy hunting!!

No, if you go to the website, you will see that just like any hunting lottery,
only the set number of permits are issued regardless of how many birds are
tagged.
When a bird is tagged. is it reported via telecheck, either on line or via
phone.  In this case, 400 names will be drawn and each will be issued a permit
to take 2 cranes.  The season will run Dec 17 through Jan 15 or until 400 birds
are taken, whichever comes first.  The website will be updated with numbers
taken and it is hunter's responsibility to know if the season ends early.
There are multiple locations for purchasing a license including on line as well
as register for the sandhill crane lottery.  All hunters born after 1975 are
required to have completed a hunters education course prior to receiving a
license.
I could not verify but just as not reporting is a violation (poaching), I would
suspect that falsely porting a bird taken when it was not would also be a
problem.

JLH, etal: Do they keep issuing permits till 400 people cal in verified
killed birds?? that may be ,a cording to other posters, hence such idea futile,
perhaps?? =/g gerald heath
PS:also another poster said it was a violation to call in a killed bird
if you had not killed one.
        A second road-block?

info can be found at http://fw.ky.gov/
To get a hunting license, you need a photo ID, no waiting period.
The license will expire end of Feb 2012.

Re: Sandhills

                  Hi Bonnie and BIRDKY-list  birders,
1.) Anyone know how hard it is to get a hunting permit (IE
background-checks?),
2.) how much it costs for hunting permit?? (IE: waiting
time-limit?)
                  3.)and if there is still time to get a hunting permit??;
                  4.)and if there's still time to apply for lottery??;
5.) If 2000 birders did that odds are we'd get most of the
400 permits!!!...and save some of the Sandhills!!

                    Bonnie,
it is not that simple.  You must have a hunting license and
then pay $3 to
enter the lottery for a crane permit.  From all those who
apply, 400 will be
                    drawn.
This is from the fish and wildlife site -
                    http://fw.ky.gov/1112sandhillcranehuntinginfo.asp

"The lottery application for Kentucky's first hunting
season on sandhill
cranes will begin Wednesday, November 15th and be open to
applications until
November 30th.  Interested applicants will need to apply
for the hunt on the
Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources Online
License and Permit
Agent site.  There will be a $3.00 charge to apply for this
drawing.  From
those that apply, there will be a maximum of 400 sportsmen
and sportswomen
selected to participate in the hunt via electronic
randomized drawing.
Everyone applying must have a valid Kentucky hunting
license or be license
exempt pursuant to KRS 150.170.  This drawing will occur on
or before the
close of business on Monday, December 5th.

The hunting season for sandhill cranes will begin December
17th, 2011 and
continue until January 15th, 2012 or until the harvest of
400 cranes,
whichever comes first.  Successful applicants will need to
complete and pass
an online identification exam before they will be issued a
permit.  Permit
holders will receive tags to harvest 2 sandhill cranes
during the season and
will be required to Telecheck cranes the day of harvest.
Hunters will also
be required to monitor the Kentucky Department of Fish and
Wildlife
Resources website daily for notices of season closure and
notifications of
the presence of whooping cranes in Kentucky.  For
additional information,
please consult the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife
Resources
                    website."
