When I began birding in the early 1970s, for whatever reason from the start I
paid particular attention to vocalizations of birds. I think that is one reason
why I quickly realized that Alder Flycatcher was not a rare or uncommon
migrant, either during spring *or* fall. The species has both distinctive song
and call notes.
It appears that *many* among our group are experiencing the pleasures of
listening to these relatively obscure migrants this spring, but most of you
must not be listening carefully! There are *actually* three parts to the song
of the Alder Flycatcher . . . I learned the song years ago as "wee-BEE-o" and
there certainly is a third syllable in that song! Sibley describes it as
"rreeBEEa"
Can you lushes out there who insist on describing the song as "free beer"
*please* give a complete description of the bird's song in the details of your
eBird lists . . . if I was a regional reviewer I'd invalidate every report that
did not describe it correctly!!!
