I grew up in northeastern Ky between two cattle farms and saw a variety of
different birds either perched on &/or eating from the backs of cattle. First
to come to mind & most typical was the brown-headed cowbird, next cattle egrets
at times, then a few common grackles, as well as a red-winged blackbird or two.

Was it a cattle egret, Frank? Beautiful bird. Saw a lot of them in northwest
Tennessee.

Two miles north of Dot in Logan County - Several times recently I have observed
a bird perched atop a cow’s back, apparently catching stock flies. Got a

such behavior or am I the only list serv member who walks among cattle?
In a reply to my last post, Ce Ci declared Dot to be Kestrel capital of the
world. Not sure about that. My father once made a statement comparing Dot to
other locales. He said, “There’s more concentrated ignorance around Dot than
anywhere else in the country.” I’ve never assembled enough evidence to either
affirm or dispute his word.
