Except for the minor inconvenience of intense heat, walking the shoreline on the corn side of 739 pond this morning was an almost park-like experience, once I got through a short stretch of shoulder high corn to get there. A wide swath of tiny weeds gives a lawn-like appearance to all the cornfield border. With little to see on the corn field side except some Killdeers and a mother Mallard with 6 babies, I decided to circle the pond. Not a great idea. On the wheat side, the sprayer tracks paralleling the shoreline were still soupy muddy. I had to walk for a long stretch on the flotsam left at the high water mark. This sunk down with each step, sort of like walking on a trampoline. For my effort I saw a mother Wood Duck with 9 ducklings out on the water. At different points, both a Mallard and a Wood Duck fluttered up just ahead of me and pretended to be injured. I saw one baby Wood Duck enter the water nearby soon after seeing the female Wood Duck and heard peeping in the wheat after the Mallard's fake out. I also saw the pair of Ring-necked Ducks again. They flew up from the wheat, then sat some distance out on the water.
