The Board of Directors of Beckham Bird Club has distributed the 2009 Birdathon funds. This year $13,850 was donated. Thanks to all who generously contributed to the BBC Birdathon. Below is the list of the recipients and the amount each received. Operation Migration - $1000 -To reintroduce a wild migratory population of Whooping Cranes to eastern North America. Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission - $2715 – For the acquisition of 175 acres in Harlan County on Pine Mountain – critical to the Pine Mountain ecosystem which includes Bad Branch and Blanton Forest - providing foraging habitat for migrating birds, for forest-breeding birds, and used by migrating raptors. Kentucky Natural Land Trusts – $2635- Pine Mountain Legacy Project is preserving and protecting a fragile migratory corridor and contiguous forest block in eastern Kentucky. Kentucky Resources Council - $1500 – To aid the public in understanding environmental regulatory programs through advocacy, representation, lobbying, and public education on environmental issues. The Council provides legal and strategic assistance without charge to low-income individuals, community groups, and local governments concerning air, waste, water, land use, and mineral development-related matters. Raptor Rehabilitation – $900 -To pay the cost of educational raptor programs for six schools unable to pay. Louisville Nature Center – $1500 – Mission is to provide nature education and encourage stewardship in an urban forest. Funds will be used to provide for free nature education programs and transportation to underfunded schools in Jefferson County. Kentucky Conservation Committee - $1500 – It serves as a legislative liaison, provides educational support – program tuition to students, publishes newsletters, etc. It has been the driving force behind a comprehensive land stewardship program for Kentucky. Jefferson Memorial Forest – $900 -The goal of this project is to enhance Caperton Swamp, a unique wetland eco-system in Jefferson County, by removing invasive species and to enhance the health of the flora and fauna. Creasy Mahan Nature Preserve - $500 – To provide educational programs for special needs, underprivileged, and foster care children. Bob and Judy Peak - $700 – The Peaks work toward the recovery of Bluebirds and other native cavity-nesting bird species in western Kentucky.
