Had a lovely morning walk at the Arboretum Saturday. Got some nice views of a Coopers Hawk and an immature Red Tail Hawk. Also got my first really great view of a yellow-bellied sapsucker. I know they're common, but I tell ya I never get good views of these little guys. They are so quiet compared to other woodpeckers. This one was right next to us and the sun really lit up its red nape and yellow belly. I was quite excited for this personal first! In no particular order, here's what we saw: Northern mockingbird Kestrel Cooper's hawk Robin Cardinal Yellow-bellied sapsucker White throated sparrow Ruby-crowned kinglet Golden-crowned kinglet (many!) White-breasted nuthatch Brown creeper (many!) Red-bellied woodpecker Towhee (heard) Carolina wren Red-tailed hawk, immature Crow Bluejay Carolina chickadee Tufted titmouse The usual non-natives like starlings, house sparrows, etc. Roberta Burnes Education Coordinator The Arboretum & State Botanical Garden of Kentucky 500 Alumni Drive Lexington, KY 40503 859/257-9339 ================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBERS============== The BIRDKY Mailing List requires you to sign your messages with first & last name, city, & state abbreviation. -------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, send e-mail to: birdky@xxxxxxxxxxxxx -------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send e-mail to: birdky-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject line. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Visit the Kentucky Ornithological Society web site at http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos.htm * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BIRDKY List Manager: Gary Ritchison, Richmond, KY E-mail: gary.ritchison@xxxxxxx
