The correct answer to the May 5 Photo Quiz is Warbling
Vireo.

The original quiz photos may be accessed by the link

Species which are most similar are Red-eyed and
Philadelphia Vireo, and Tennessee Warbler.

Red-eyed shows a more distinct cap with dark lower
border, more prominent supercilium, and stronger dark
eye-line. The red iris of the adults can be seen at
close range.

Both Warbling and Philadelphia Vireos can show yellow
on the underparts, and this can be especially bright
on fall birds in fresh plumage. Spring birds such as
the quiz bird are often much duller. The placement of
the yellow is different in these two species with
Warbling being brightest on the sides/flanks, and
Philadelphia being brightest on the center of the
throat and upper breast. In the upper photo we can
see that there is a yellowish tint to the flanks, and
both photos show that the center of the throat and
upper breast are whitish.

The facial patterns of the two species differs also
with Philadelphia typically showing darker lores and
often a darker post-ocular stripe giving them a
stronger dark eye-line. This is rather indistinct in
the quiz bird.

The shape of the supercilium lends a clue, with that
of Warbling often arched or widened above and behind
the eye, and can be seen in the photos. The
supercilium in Philadelphia typically narrows behind
the eye.

Tennessee Warbler can be very similar to Warbling and
Philadelphia Vireos, but has a sharper, more pointed
bill. Although the bill on the quiz bird appears thin
for a vireo, the lower photo shows it to be rather
blunt-tipped. Tennessee Warbler also tends to be a
brighter green on the back as opposed to the dull
olive-green of the quiz bird.

This Warbling Vireo was photographed at the Falls of
the Ohio, Indiana, on 1 May 2005.
