This morning, after seeing a Lincoln's Sparrow in a weedy field just barely out of the yard I decided to see how many other sparrow species I could see today. My list was Swamp, Song, White-crowned, White-throated, Savannah and Field Sparrows. In a brushy 2nd growth woods I waited for about 10 minutes with my scope trained on some fallen hedge balls hoping a chickadee would return for more food and a photo-op. When I finally gave up and moved on I hadn't taken but 3 or 4 steps when a Woodcock flushed right at my feet. I stopped and thought "Dang! Why couldn't I have seen that bird only a few steps from where I've been standing the last ten minutes?" Then I took just one more step and flushed a second Woodcock, also right at my feet.
