I headed out to western Kentucky on Monday with some friends that wanted to see
the Sandhill Cranes and then decided to try to find the Whooping Cranes that we
just got word about and then also saw the post for the Northern Shrike and
Tundra Swans that were seen the day before out at Peabody. We had a pretty good
day. Saw a big flock of Sandhills with six Whoopers mixed in. Found the four
Tundra's and also finally found the Northern Shrike after thinking we were
going
to shrikeout. Got a good look at a couple of Merlins as well. We did dip on the
Short-eared Owls however. Got some pictures of the Whoopers and the Shrike and
a
few other winter birds from the previous week including a Great Blue Heron
laying down, something that I had never seen before.
