Report from Spindletop from March 9.
The Sandhill Crane still shows a wing with unhealthy feather growth so it
may become a farm resident. It seems to either be at the pond or a nearby
cornfield so its range appears to be limited.
Found a small but varied selection of species at the pond including 2
White-fronted Geese, Green-winged Teal, Gadwall, Scaup, Redheads,
Ring-necked and American Wigeon.
Raptors were very visible with a mouse being brought to its mate at the
Red-tailed Hawk nest near the entrance of the farm, a Cooper's that, from
the size of its crop, must have reduced the pigeon population by one, and a
beautiful pair of Kestrels hanging out together.
I have included a couple of non-bird species. There was a horse playing in
a mud puddle apparently seeing which hoof could produce the biggest
splash. Sheer joy! I also found a beautiful, mostly white skunk. I was
with a person I had just met and when we saw it we both jumped out of the
car and approached the skunk to within 15'. We were definitely 2 birds of a
feather hanging out together! The skunk lay down in the warm sun, stretched
out and posed for us before wandering off.
