I could not resist getting out today with the sun out and temp getting up into
the 60's. Had a great couple of hours out at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. I
went back to see if I could get some better photos of the Loggerhead Shrikes
that we found our last time out. I was scanning a short grass field counting
robins when I saw a shrike on the ground hunting. It would walk a little and
then open it's wings, flashing it's wing bars. I watched this activity for
about
5 min. It really reminded me of the way a Reddish Egret hunts. Most of what I
could find on the Internet indicated that they generally sit on a perch and
then
swoop down on prey, rather than foraging on the ground with these wing flashes.
Is this typical behavior? I have a short sketchy video of the shrike doing this
if anyone is interested. Other than that had most of the usual suspects.
I have posted a few shots from this walk and my outing to Maine Chance Farm
from
a couple of days previous. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/lang-photoshare/)
