As I was walking across campus (with a group of hopefully not-too-rowdy 6th
graders), some of us witnessed a startling sight. A hawk (probably
Sharp-Shinned) flew almost in front of us - about 20 ft. off the ground - with
something BRIGHT RED in its talons. This HAD to be a male cardinal!! (Right
color and size). Of course I did not have my binoculars.
Years ago, when I took an ornithology class at UK (Wayne Davis, professor), our
class did a field study of cardinal territories on campus. How ironic that
THIS cardinal may have been a descendant of the one my partner (Pat Danridge)
and I followed around. Its territory included Memorial Hall!
My students and I were right beside Memorial Hall today when the hawk flew in
front of us. I thought it landed in a blue spruce, but the kids said they
could see it 'in the window' (there are louvered openings in the bell tower;
this may be where they meant). This happened at about 10:30 in the morning.
We couldn't stick around and look for it, because we had to keep up with our
group and our itinerary.
