The Virginia Bio-Fuels Forum, sponsored by DMME?s Division of Energy, will hold it?s next event in conjunction with an educational forum on biofuels organized by Public Policy Virginia (PPV). The forum will take place in Danville, VA at Averett University on Saturday December 10th from 9:30-13:30 and will focus on bio-diesel and ethanol made from cellulosic feedstock as potential major sources of fuel for America?s transportation energy needs. The event will discuss the benefits of bio-fuels and how to bring the topic into the public policy arena. In particular, PPV believes that switchgrass, which can be grown economically in Southside Virginia, is a viable source of biomass for ethanol, as well as a potential economic boon to the region?s farmers and local economy. To register for this event please go to PPV?s web site http://www.ppvir.org and follow the ?Events? link. Speakers include: Tom Whipple- Reporter for the Falls Church News-Press, contributor to www.energybulletin.net, and publisher of a daily newsletter on Peak Oil. Tom will speak on Peak Oil and the need to explore alternative energies. Chad Freckmann- Executive Director of Blue Ridge Clean Fuels and organizer of the quarterly Virginia Biofuels Forum. Chad will discuss the ways in which biodiesel can be produced, how it can be used and how it can contribute to local economies and national security. Dr. Foster Agblevor- Professor of Biological Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech. Foster will give an overview of the technologies and chemical processes involved in converting biomass to biofuels so that a lay person can understand how it is done and that the technologies are available and in use today. Al Weed- Chairman of Public Policy Virginia. Al will discuss the potential economic impact to southern VA (communities and farmers) of local ethanol production. Dr. Don Wells- Don will look at the pending federal legislation and obstacles to public policy that can move biofuels production forward. Mitch King- Mitch is the President and GM of Old Mill Power Company which sells electricity produced using low environmental impact, renewable, or nondepletable primary energy sources including biomass. Mitch will talk about a proposal for a value-added power plant in Southside that will initially produce electricity but will eventually be able to produce biodiesel and ethanol for transportation fuel. Dr. David Bransby- Professor of Energy Crops and Bioenergy, Forage/Livestock Management in the Dept. of Agronomy and Soils at Auburn University will discuss Switchgrass and why it is a good energy crop for VA. He will talk about potential yields and farming techniques, harvesting, different uses (co-firing, biodiesel, and ethanol) and projects underway in AL and elsewhere where switchgrass in being used for energy. **************************VIRGINIA BIOFUELS FORUM************************** Your email address is subscribed to the Virginia Biofuels Forum mailing list.
