Hi Lance,
We do not have a specified process for 1st, 2nd, and subsequent violations, but
are pretty consistent in our approach. Second violations for possession
(typically marijuana) would result in a period of probation or deferred
suspension with the university, possible removal from university housing, and
some type of educational sanction (completion/documentation of an online
educational component like eToke, a course/meeting with Ames Center for
Creative Justice and following any recommendations they have, or a substance
abuse assessment/screening). Third or subsequent violations would be charged as
a Level 1 case in our system, meaning the student would have to present their
case to a Student Conduct Hearing Board and could face suspension/expulsion.
The sanctions in these cases are up to the boards, but if not removed, often
include Deferred Suspension, removal/restriction from housing,
assessment/screening, treatment recommendations, required meeting with the Dean
of Students, etc.
If there are other factors involved in a second violation (if there are other
drugs involved, possible distribution or manufacturing occurring, other
behavioral issues during the arrest, etc.), the case could be made Level 1 at
that point.

I am curious how y'all address repeat drug possession incidents on your campus.
We are currently revising our practices and I am curious how you address second
(and third) time possession on your campuses? I would appreciate as much
information as you would be willing to share because we are trying to do some
big overhauls this summer.
