I couldn't confirm the Osprey sighting, because my sister and nephew saw it, but I just saw him for myself around 4:20 p.m. ----- Original Message ----- From: Roger Mayhorn To: BCBC Listserve Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 8:12 PM Subject: [bcbirdclub] Re: osprey Congratulations Cheryl, You beat last year's first reported Osprey by 5 days, which was the earliest date up to that point. That one was on the 31st. That report was yours also by the way. Either the birds are arriving a bit earlier or you birders out there are getting better at finding them. Our records show that in 2006 the first Osprey was found on the Levisa River near Weller Yard by Ed Talbott II (that is II not III) on April 7. Cheryl, with your late date for an Osprey on November 3rd last year you now have the early and late date reports for that species in the area. Last year on March 28 Lynda and I drove up into the Head of Slate Creek, the next large hollow past the road that turns up the mountain to our place, and found 3 Louisiana Waterthrushes and an early Black-throated Green Warbler. So today we made the same trip, hoping to find some early arrivals, but it was not to be. The only birds we found at all were a couple of Downy Woodpeckers and a Carolina Chickadee. If some of you don't remember the hollow I'm referring to, it's the one where the road crosses the creek several times and where we usually see the Swainson's Warblers. Lynda and I were sadly surprised to see heavy logging going on near the last house in the hollow. Fortunately, the best part of the hollow begins just past that, and so far it has not been disturbed. Let's hope it stays that way.
