Sixteen birders joined us at our house on Saturday for our 10th year of hosting Warbler Day for our fellow birders. We had good birders and birds, then we had CRAZY MIKE. LOL (see photo). We had a good day in spite of off and on rainy conditions. Even though the warbler numbers were down, probably due to the weather, we counted 12 warbler species with a total of 52 avian species for the day. The warbler species were Tennessee, Northern Parula, Chestnut-sided, Magnolia, Cape May, Black-throated Green,Yellow-throated, Black-and-white, American Redstart, Worm-eating, Ovenbird and Hooded. Other migrants included Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, American Kestrel, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Northern Flicker, Great Crested Flycatcher, both Red-eyed and Yellow Throated Vireos, Blue jay, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, both Swainson's and Wood Thrush, Gray Catbird, Brown Thrasher, Scarlet Tanager, Chipping Sparrow, Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Indigo Bunting. The day's complete list is at the end of this message. Lynda Mayhorn prepared a great lunch of chicken, baked beans, potato salad, crescent rolls, spinach dip and hot dogs, which Mike Sanders had difficulty eating because of the chestnut spikes in his tongue. All side dishes and desserts brought by those attending were appreciated, but the talk of the kitchen was the beautiful chocolate cake made by Dawn Carrier in honor of our 10 years of Warbler Day. It was a visual work of art and contained 7 types of chocolate with ganache frosting and was topped with lindor and rocher chocolate candies. (see link below for photo). As a lover of chocolate I can certify that it was delicious.
