Warbler Day this year will be on Saturday, September 14. If you plan on
attending, please make your reservation as soon as possible by replying to
this email, so we can prepare enough food, etc. for the correct number of
birders. Please let us know for sure by September 1.
For those who may not know about Warbler Day, it is an annual event my wife
Lynda and I hold at our place here on Compton Mountain in northeastern
Buchanan County VA. We are lucky enough to live near a mountain top where,
during the month of September, migrating fall warblers and other songbirds
stop by our place on a regular basis with the peak migration being somewhere
around September 15. Birders arrive early in the morning, around 7:00 to
spend the day watching the colorful migrants as they drop into the trees and
shrubs in our yard and surrounding woods to feed on their way south. On a
good day we may count as many as 50 to 55 species, though one year we did
reach 60. Not much walking is required. You can stay in one spot in our
front or back yard and get lots of species, though you can, if the birding
slows down, walk around our birding trail that leads you through our woods
and fields.
We offer a free lunch, and some birders bring additional dishes and desserts
to add to the repast. So dust off your binoculars, bring a camp or lawn
chair, a drink to go with your free lunch and come watch the migration with
us.
