Roger,

You were not the first to report the vultures to me. A local artist was
driving by and actually got a sketch of the vulture holding the sign.

He described him as an 'old' buzzard, somewhat senile, so I don't hold the
sign against him.

Hi All,

Today as Lynda and I drove off the mountain we came upon 11 Turkey Vultures
perched in trees along the left side of the road. They weren't disturbed by
us or another vehicle that came by. We didn't see a dead animal around, that
might have brought them in. As we passed by I slowed down because I saw that
one seemed to be holding something in its talons.

With the binoculars that we always carry in the car, I took a close look and
was amazed. It was holding a small sign that read, " We thought we smelled
Don Carrier." Needless to say, we drove on quickly. As we came back hours
later, three of the birds were still sitting there, but the sign was gone :)

This evening after dark 2 of the 4 foxes came into the yard for their
evening treats. A couple of hours later I looked out to see 2 Barred Owls in
the yard. One was down in the grass, and the other was sitting atop a 4x4
post near the pond, that has a bluebird box attached to it. In a few moments
the one on the post joined the other on the ground. They spent the next few
minutes catching nightcrawlers. They would half spread their wings and
run-hop a few feet to a worm, grab it and gulp it down.

I was watching them through binoculars even though they were only about 25
feet away. I didn't think they could see me because the room was dark, and I
was behind the outside lights, but when they turned to stare intently at me
for several seconds with those black onyx eyes, it was as though they knew
exactly what I was doing, and they weren't fooled at all.

They remained in the yard until another of the 4 Gray Foxes came in for a
handout. The two then glided as silently as ghosts into the darkness and
into the woods.

They are probably nesting nearby.
