[bcbirdclub] Various water holes in SW Virginia

Area Birders,

Michelle, Chazzy and I spent the day driving to various water holes in SW 
Virginia and UE Tenn looking for water birds.  We found a few and managed to 
stay dry most of the day.  Below is a list of the places we stopped and what we 
found there.

Grundy, VA

Stuart's Pond - Russell Co.
Canada Goose - 7
Green-winged Teal - 1
Gadwall - 3

Mud Hole, Elk Garden, Russell Co.
Wood Duck - 5
Mallard - 2
White-crowned and White-throated Sparrows

Hidden Valley Lake
Pied-billed Grebe - 1
Common Loon - 1
Mallard - 4
Ring-necked Duck - 1

Ponds on Rt. 19 at Abingdon
American Coot - 2
Canada Goose - 1
Mallard - 2

Musick's Campground
Red-breasted Mergansers - 10
Common Loon - 16
Pied-billed Grebe - 1
Lesser Yellowlegs - 1
Tree Swallows - many
Cliff Swallow - 1
Bonaparte's Gulls - 12
[also over 20 Bonies at Rt. 421 bridge in one raft with a few Ring-billed 
thrown in for a size comparison)
Ringed-billed Gull - 100+
Mallard - 2

Small Farm Pond just up road from Musick's towards Abingdon
Northern Shoveler - 5
Mallard - 2

Weir Dam
Blue-winged Teal - 5
Green-winged Teal 2
Bufflehead - 31
Greater Scaup - 3 (my first ever west of the New River)
Pied-billed Grebe - 1
Canada Goose - 2
Mallard - 3

Saltville, VA Ponds
Mallard - 19
Ring-necked Duck - 14
Lesser Scaup - 4
Canada Goose - 3
American Coot - 3
Blue-winged Teal - 2
NRW and Tree Swallows - many

Road to Laurel Bed Lake was closed - not sure why.
