Jerry,

I had a RT Hawk on a deer carcass last week just past the bridge at Elk Garden.
It was there when I went by on my way to Kretz and an hour later.

All week, I've been watching a deer carcass in a field as I go to and from
work. For those of you who were on the January field trip led by Tom Hunter
last winter, it's very near the spot where we had the Red-shouldered Hawk.
Since the vultures have left Russell County for the winter, the crows have
taken over carrion disposal. As I came home this afternoon, I glanced over as
I passed to see how much was left. I saw about a half dozen crows and what
appeared to be a hawk. I turned around at the first chance and went back.
Sure enough there was an adult Red-tailed Hawk by the carcass. All the crows
were gone, but at least for a moment, both crows and a hawk were together at
the table. I haven't seen Red-tails scavenging before, and I haven't seen
crows and Red-tails in anything other than an adversarial situation before.

  Jerry
