Jerry, I had a RT Hawk on a deer carcass last week just past the bridge at Elk Garden. It was there when I went by on my way to Kretz and an hour later. For those of you who were on the January field trip led by Tom Hunter last winter, it's very near the spot where we had the Red-shouldered Hawk. Since the vultures have left Russell County for the winter, the crows have taken over carrion disposal. As I came home this afternoon, I glanced over as I passed to see how much was left. I saw about a half dozen crows and what appeared to be a hawk. I turned around at the first chance and went back. Sure enough there was an adult Red-tailed Hawk by the carcass. All the crows were gone, but at least for a moment, both crows and a hawk were together at the table. I haven't seen Red-tails scavenging before, and I haven't seen crows and Red-tails in anything other than an adversarial situation before.
