Remember that the Russell County Bird Club has a field trip scheduled for tomorrow, May 24, to the Hidden Valley Lake WMA. Our target birds include nesting warblers such as Black-throated Blue and Green, and Canada. Also expect Rose-breasted Grosbeak and vireo species. Many other species are possible. For Lebanon area residents, meet at Hardees at 7:30 for coffee/breakfast/visiting. Trip leaves from Lebanon Park & Ride at 8:15. Those from the Abingdon/Bristol area can meet the Lebanon group near the monument at the foot of the mountain at 8:30. This trip takes place on Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries property and is subject to an access fee. The fee for daily use is $4/day. The fee is waived if you have a valid Virginia fishing, hunting, or trapping license, or a current boating registration. An annual permit is also available for $23. Complete information about the access permit program can be found at the DGIF web site <http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/access-permit/> . You can also purchase permits on line from the web site. Please note that if you are considering an annual permit, it would be more beneficial to buy an annual fishing license. The cost is the same ($23), but the DGIF gets federal matching funds ($8) for each license sold. This is true of hunting licenses as well except that the matching funds are greater ($12/license). Access permits may also be purchased by phone (1-866-721-6911) or at any license agent (e. g., Walmart in Lebanon). For Virginia residents 65 and older, you can purchase a lifetime license for only $15. This has to be done through the Richmond office. Application forms are available on the DGIF web site or from license agents. Bring snacks/drinks/lunch. There are limited facilities on this trip. Jerry Thornhill RCBC
