Hi All, I was able to talk to Orpha today about 11:30 a.m. I was surprised when she gave Sheldon the phone. He was being prepared to go to the operating room at that time. I was able to speak to him for less than a minute before he had to go. He seemed alert. Orpha called back around 4:00 p.m. She said the operation had gone very well. It seems that the invasive surgery was not necessary (at least not yet), and the procedure consisted of putting a tube in through his mouth all the way to his pancreas and removing necrotic tissue. He came through the operation very well, and was doing well at the time Orpha called. She said that Sheldon would be removed from the ventilator this evening. She was told that the doctors were able to remove about 90% of the necrotic tissue. On Sunday a CT Scan will be performed, and if everything looks good, the doctors plan to go in again on Monday to remove the rest of the tissue. According to Orpha, Sheldon has lost about 90% of his pancreas, and of course that is something he will have to deal with in the future, but at least for the moment we can all breathe a sigh of relief.
