[bcbirdclub] Pine Siskins - Breaks Park

Buchanan Birders,

Michelle, Chazzy and I spent the morning birding Camp Creek and the Garden Hole 
at the Breaks park this morning.  The biggest surpise is the number of Pine 
Siskins in the area.  For the past three days we have had about 30-40 Siskins 
feeding in the big Sweetgum trees behind our house along the Levisa River.  
Also, while following an SUV near the Willowbrook Country Club at the Breaks, 
we turned a curve and saw about 30 or so Siskins in the road.  They did not get 
off the road in time and the SUV killed three of them.  We drove back to check 
but all three were dead.  Also at Laurel Lake Dam we saw a large mixed flock 
(well over 100) of Siskins and Goldfinch fly over.  This might be a great year 
for northern species in our area - I've already heard of Snow Buntings, 
White-winged Crossbills, Lapland Longspurs, Gryfalcon, and other northern 
species being seen in Virginia in the past month so keep a close eye out.
