Great day of birding David. The Buffleheads are another great sighting for our area. As we discussed on the phone, the Osprey you sighted is a new late date for that species in the area. Sorry Cheryl (Thompson) your November 3rd sighting in 2007 was the late date until yesterday :( On Wednesday I had both male and female Purple Finches at my feeder. On Thursday a female showed up during the Thanksgiving Day Window Watch. On Friday and this morning there was a single female here. Late Thursday night before going to bed I turned on the outside light as I usually do and saw what at first I thought was a fox in the shadows in the yard. After getting a good look I realized it was too tall and too large to be a fox. It was staring at a possum that was near the back door. In a few seconds it turned to leave the yard, and I could see that it was a coyote. That's the first one I have seen here in the yard. I'm not sure if it was comig after the possum or could smell where we had fed the foxes some turkey scraps. Yesterday morning I had time to do a little birding in the Breaks Park. The first bird, after stepping out of the truck, was an Osprey at the Garden Hole of the Russell Fork River. The river also produced 3 Hooded Mergansers huddled together under the branches of a fallen tree . I started up the trail that runs up river and instantly saw a big Tom Turkey working the trail & moving away from me. I followed quietly for several minutes until I ran into a small feeder-flock of birds that includedGolden-cr Kinglets and Carolina Chickadees. I also noted a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker,Pileated Woodpecker & Carolina Wren along the trail. There were lots of beaver cuttings in the birches & hemlocks along the river. After leaving the river, I checked on the water-fowl at Laurel Lake & was surprised to find 5 Bufflehead(3m,2f). This is only the 3rd time in 30+ years of birding this area for that species for me! There were also 3 Hooded Mergansers & 2 Pied-billed Grebes present. Other birds around the lake included: Belted Kingfisher,Blue Jay & Eastern Bluebirds. Later in the afternoon, on a walk with Dad & my brother Jim we found another male Hooded Merganser on the Beaver Pond. We also found a Brown Creeper,Golden-cr Kinglets & Chickadees at the Mill-rock Point overlook. An Eastern Phoebe and Winter Wren at the Lover's Leap overlook were the last birds of record for a very good late November day of birding. Dave R/Breaks VA
