Tuesday we went to Mackay Island NWR and Back Bay NWR.  It was cold and
windy so we didn't get out of the car much.  We did see some pretty good
birds.  We found a Belted Kingfisher shortly after she found lunch.

In a tree next to the kingfisher was a Great Blue Heron in a faceoff with a
Great Egret.

Yesterday we went back to Lake Mattamuskeet NWR since Jane did not go on
Friday because of the weather.  Today was still cold and breezy so most
birding was from the car.  We went by to try to see the Brewer's Blackbird
that is in the area.  It was right where it was supposed to be and we got a
good but quick look before it flew away.  Just down the road, we saw a solid
wall of Red-winged Blackbirds.  As we started down to turn around, more
red-wings started flying from the field on the left across the road to the
field on the right.  For well over a minute, the sky was filled with birds
as shown in the picture below.

When we got to the end of the road to turn around, we could see both fields
with the left field still full of blackbirds as indicated in the picture
below.

We also found a nearby field with perhaps 300 White Ibis feeding
frantically.  It was easily the largest group of these birds we have ever
seen.  And we also found many Snow Geese again in fields both yesterday and
today.  There were a large number of blue geese mixed in these groups.  One
small group of 15 birds had 7 dark morphs in it.  Here's one of these birds
with several of its paler companions.
