Weather:
The temperature ranged from a low of 65 in the morning to a high of 77 when
the day ended. A moderate, and relatively cool wind of 13-18 mph blew
steadily out of the east/southeast, throughout the day, bringing a welcome
relief to the heat of the last two days. Visibility was approximately 10
miles, with a light to moderate haze. Skies ranged partly cloudy to mostly
cloudy then mostly clear in the afternoon, providing some backdrop for
spotting hawks.
Raptor Observations:
Most of the Broad-winged hawks were counted in the first two hours, riding
the wind down the East/Southeast side of the mountain. Most could be seen
with unaided vision.
No raptors were seen after 2:00 pm. The lone Am. Bald Eagle was an
immature.
Non-raptor Observations:
Usual array of Turkey and Black Vultures, a few Chimney Swifts, a couple of
Ravens, a Red-headed WP, and a local Red-tailed hawk.
Predictions:
Sites up the line are reporting some great numbers: Yesterday Rockfish Gap
reported 10,676 hawks, and today they had 8707. Hanging Rock Tower (WV) had
2212 today, and Harvey's Knob (VA) had 1589 yesterday.
Should have relatively good flying conditions tomorrow.
