Total observation time: 4.5 hours
Official Counter: Ron Harrington
Observers: Sam Evans
Visitors:
Preston and Harper Jessee from Scott County, VA
Weather:
The weather was clear and sunny in the morning, then cumulus clouds began
to form around noon, providing some backdrop and relief from the heat.
Temperature ranged from a low of 69 to a high of 82 when we left.
Visibility was 5-10 miles with hazy conditions. Wind was light and
variable, with occasional moderate breezes out of the North/Northeast by
early afternoon.
Raptor Observations:
The first Broad-winged hawk was seen at 9:44 and the first kettle arrived
at 10:16. Most of the hawks were seen during the 10:00-11:00 hour (111).
Most were at the limit of unaided eyesight, flying very high. The Osprey
and a Bald Eagle were circling on the same thermal and the Osprey kept
diving at the Eagle. The Eagles were all immature.
Non-raptor Observations:
We had the usual array of Turkey and Black Vultures, two Ravens roaming
around, one Red-headed WP, and several Chimney Swifts.
We saw numerous dragonflies, species unknown.
Predictions:
There are good numbers of hawks in the "pipe line" and flying conditions
should be the same as today. It will feel hot again with partly cloudy
conditions and a high of 84.
