Just after sunrise on Wednesday morning the yard was a beehive of activity with birds flying in all directions. A flock of at least 75 Cedar Waxwings were feeding on wild grapes, poke berries and Virginia Creeper berries. Three Blue-headed Vireos were finding caterpillars in the walnut trees in the yard. A Nashville Warbler and a few Tennessee Warblers were working the Goldenrod and Yellow Crownbeard at the edge of the yard. Later a Magnolia Warbler came down to the yard stream to bathe. A lone Ruby-throated Hummingbird was gleaning nectar from the orange Jewel Weed at the edge of the woods. Eastern Towhees were calling from under every shrub and wildflower patch. The calls of Swainson's Thrushes and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks could be heard in the surrounding trees. A Summer Tanager posed long enough for a couple of photos on a dead branch. A couple of Gray-cheeked Thrushes and several Wood Thrushes were just inside the shadows of the woods feeding on wild grapes and poke berries. I was able to get several photos of one Gray-cheeked when it came to the yard stream. It was a very enjoyable, crisp, early fall morning.
