Who said this group likes a little humor? There's probably no other listserv in the country where such serious scientific research into dowitcher ID is being done. Paddle Creek Ponds Wow Jerry, you may want to be careful with Mike. It looks like he has really gotten into this sophisitcated techy stuff. You never know, sometimes soon he may have a small drone hovering over your house with a blow dart just for you... Just sayin. Paddle Creek Ponds What Jerry doesn't know is I am currently tracking the said Dowitcher. During our brief encounter today I quickly pulled out my trusty blow gun and hit the mark with a sophisticated GPS tracking device just before it took flight, not sure if that dart made it take flight or not ,but anyway, Lemaster was a bit nervous but I assured him I was a pro at this, and no harm would come to the bird. As seen on this advanced GPS/Radar/Tracking/high-tech something or other Map, you can see the birds current whereabouts, if you look real real real and I do mean real close you can see that the bird is currently walking around in Jerry's front yard, thats how advanced this map is, but I shouldn't go into techy stuff, I wouldn't want to cornfuse anyone. Dan K you better keep your eyes peeled as this fellow may come right by your place tonight or tomorrow, (at least thats what the future tracking model indicated, fancy map can tell you anything). As for me I am currently at a loss as to which bird this is and thats the LONG and SHORT of the issue currently. Keep watching and we will soon know which one....Peace Out...... Since the bird is clearly migrating to its breeding ground, simply follow it there. If it ends up here, it's a Long-billed. <image001.jpg> If it ends up here, it's a Short-billed. <image002.jpg> Alternatively, you could just ask it, "Hey, man. Where you heading?" If you're lucky, he'll tell you. Paddle Creek Ponds Roger Lemaster located this Dowitcher this afternoon at Paddle Creek ponds, I arrived to see it briefly and obtain a couple of photos. The bird took flight and went north out of sight. One photo is of the bird resting which Lemaster digi-scoped with his phone. You can see the buff coloration on the breast and belly in his photo. I wasn't able to get a front on shot of the bird or see its belly. Any suggestions on if this is a Long-billed or Short-billed or simply unknown would be appreciated. When the bird took flight it made a call similar to a long-billed, while feeding we could hear it give a call note. The bobolinks are still present, at one point a helicopter flew over and flushed them, it appeared to be 100+ birds in the air. Thanks Mike Sanders Bristol, VA
